About the GMAT

Exam Format and Timing The GMAT exam consists of three main parts:

Analytical Writing Assessment
Quantitative section
Verbal section.
Integrated Reasoning to be added, June 2012

The duration of the GMAT exam is about 3 and a half hours plus time for 2 optional breaks. Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) The first part of the exam consists of two 30 minute writing tasks. The fist is Analysis of an Issue. Here you will be asked to express and support your opinion on an issue. The second writing task is Analysis of an Argument. This task will require that you critically analyze (attack and strengthen) and argument Quantitative Section: After an optional 5 minute break, you will be presented with the Quantitative Section of the GMAT exam. This section consists of 37 multiple-choice questions dived into two question types—Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving. You will be tested on your knowledge of the following concepts: -Arithmetic -Algebra -Geometry -Statistic You will have maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section. Verbal Section: After completing the Quantitative Section and taking an optional break, you will begin the Verbal Section of the GMAT exam. You will have a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section and it consists of 41 multiple choice questions divided into three question types— -Reading Comprehension Question Types Include the following: Main Idea, Tone, Purpose, Organization, Category of Writing, Identity of Author, Detail of passage, Support for a Premise, Definition of Term -Critical Reasoning Question Types for Critical reasoning passages include the following: Main Idea, Must be True, Method of Reasoning, Flaw in Reasoning, Parallel Reasoning, Stengthen, Weaken, Assumption, Inference and Evaluate the Argument) and -Sentence Correction You will be ask to identify the most grammatically correct sentence among five possibilities. Common error types are as follows: Subject Verb Agreement, Pronoun use, Verb Tense, Parallel Structure, Comparisons, Punctuation, Concision, Clarity. Computer-Adaptive Test CAT Format The Quantitative and Verbal sections of the GMAT consist of multiple-choice questions delivered in a computer-adaptive format. Questions in these sections are selected based on your performance ; the multiple-choice questions will adapt the difficulty and value of the question to your ability.
